Jammu: National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah expressed confidence that his party would form the next government in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), following what he described as a “spectacular” performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking at a rally in Gurha Slathia, Samba district, Abdullah noted that the BJP had failed to deliver on its promises over the past decade.
Abdullah highlighted that the BJP’s seat count fell significantly short of their claims, stopping at 240 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. He suggested this reflected public dissatisfaction and a desire for change.
Abdullah also pointed out the BJP’s reduced margin of votes in Jammu and Udhampur, where support dropped by over two lakh votes compared to previous years.
Despite losing to jailed leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid in Baramulla by a significant margin, Abdullah remained optimistic about NC’s prospects in the upcoming assembly elections, expected by September or October.
He attributed BJP’s poor performance to unmet promises on development, job creation, and curbing terrorism, issues exacerbated by the Agniveer scheme’s unpopularity.
Addressing local concerns, Abdullah lamented the neglect of areas like Gurha Slathia, known for its significant contribution to the armed forces. He criticized the BJP for ignoring youth employment and development, promising to prioritize these issues if NC returns to power.
Abdullah also criticized the handling of the Katra-Delhi Expressway project, noting the exclusion of local contractors and engineers.
He assured that NC would regularize daily wagers and tackle unemployment. He warned against divisive tactics as assembly elections approach, urging voters to choose wisely for tangible improvements.
Abdullah’s remarks were seen as an indirect jab at former NC leaders who switched to BJP in 2021. He concluded by praising the resilience of NC workers in organizing the rally despite attempts to sabotage it.
