Unidentified terrorists set ablaze a girls’ middle school in Razmak tehsil of North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, destroying furniture, computers, and books, police reported on Wednesday, as per Dawn. This incident is the latest in a troubling series of similar attacks. Officials confirmed there were no casualties.
On Monday night, attackers entered the Golden Arrow Girls Middle School in Shakhimar village and set it on fire, damaging furniture, ceilings, computers, books, and other equipment. Abrar, a member of the Shakhimar Welfare Organisation, informed Dawn that the school was built in 2020 by an organization in collaboration with the Pakistan Army’s 7th Division. In March, unknown assailants destroyed the school’s solar power system, creating panic among students. However, local elders convinced the girls to continue their education.
Recently, attacks on schools have intensified in North and South Waziristan. On May 9, terrorists torched a girls’ private school in the Shawa area of South Waziristan. On May 17, unidentified terrorists bombed an under-construction girls’ private school in Lower South Waziristan.
In a related incident, Usman Mehsud, additional Station House Officer of Azam Warsak Police Station, Lower South Waziristan, narrowly escaped a remote-controlled bomb attack targeting his vehicle on Monday. The blast occurred about 150 meters from the police station, damaging his car but leaving him uninjured. Police sources reported that in the May 9 explosion, militants tortured the school’s watchman before detonating bombs in two rooms of the building, causing no injuries or fatalities.
In May last year, two government girls’ schools in Mirali experienced similar attacks, with around 500 girls enrolled in the targeted institutions, Government Girls Middle School Noor Jannat and Government Girls Middle School Yunus Kot. These attacks took place around midnight and caused no casualties. These schools, the only private girls’ educational facilities in the area, had previously received multiple threats.
