Pakistan Enforces Essential Services Act to Maintain PIA Operations
Key Highlights:
- Pakistan enacts Essential Services Act for PIA to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Employees defying directives face up to one-year imprisonment and fines.
- Move coincides with ongoing privatisation process of Pakistan International Airlines.
In a strategic move to maintain seamless airline operations, the Pakistani government has enforced the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), as reported by ARY News. The Ministry of Interior mandated the act for six months, granting PIA the authority to take disciplinary actions against employees defying lawful directives.
Under this act, any employee who contravenes lawful orders, incites disobedience among peers, abandons duties without justification, or refuses assigned tasks, will face strict punitive measures. Violators of the act may face imprisonment of up to one year and potential fines, according to the official notification.
This enforcement follows reports from May indicating advancements in the privatisation process of PIA. By the May 17 deadline, eight companies had submitted bids for the national carrier’s privatisation. The pre-qualification process for these potential bidders is set to begin shortly, with shortlisted companies expected to receive detailed information about PIA. This phase is anticipated to conclude by the end of May.
The companies that submitted bids include Shineji Company of China, Fly Jinnah, Airblue Limited, Jiri International Pvt Ltd, Younis Brothers Holdings Consortium, Pak Ethanol Consortium, and Blue World City Consortium, showcasing a diverse range of interest in the privatisation process.
