India Showcases Forest Conservation Efforts at UNFF 19
India recently participated in the 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change highlighted India’s significant strides in forest conservation and sustainable management, resulting in a consistent increase in forest cover over the past fifteen years.
Key Highlights:
- India ranks third globally in net gain of forest area between 2010 and 2020.
- Emphasis on biodiversity and wildlife conservation with the expansion of protected areas.
- Introduction of initiatives like the International Big Cat Alliance and Green Credit Programme to strengthen conservation efforts.
India underscored its commitment to biodiversity and wildlife conservation by expanding the network of protected areas, including wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, tiger reserves, and biosphere reserves. The celebrations marking 50 years of Project Tiger and 30 years of Project Elephant demonstrate India’s dedication to species conservation and habitat protection.
Additionally, India introduced the International Big Cat Alliance and the ‘Green Credit Programme’ to incentivize tree plantations and restore degraded forest lands, further enhancing climate action initiatives. Recommendations from India’s Country Led Initiative under UNFF in 2023 were presented, focusing on forest fire management and certification.
At UNFF 19, India hosted a side event on landscape integrated fire management in collaboration with international organizations. The session concluded with a declaration to accelerate actions to halt deforestation and prevent land degradation, aligning with the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests and Global Forest Goals.
The Indian delegation, led by Jitendra Kumar, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, Government of India, reiterated India’s commitment to global forest conservation efforts.
