BRS Leader K Kavitha Seeks Bail in CBI and ED Cases

Key Highlights:

  1. K Kavitha, leader of BRS, seeks bail in cases related to Delhi excise policy investigated by CBI and ED.
  2. Alleges arrest as illegal, citing lack of evidence and non-compliance with PMLA.
  3. Accuses ruling party of using investigative agencies for political gains ahead of 2024 elections.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha has filed a bail plea in Delhi High Court regarding cases investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) linked to the Delhi excise policy. The bail petitions, previously rejected by a trial court, are set to be heard by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma’s bench on Friday.

Represented by Advocates Mohit Rao and Deepak Nagar, Kavitha argues that the ED case relies solely on statements without corroborating evidence and asserts her arrest as illegal under PMLA section 19. She contends that the investigation is politically motivated, aimed at tarnishing her reputation and that of her father, the former Chief Minister of Telangana, ahead of the 2024 elections.

Kavitha was arrested by the ED on March 15, 2024, and by the CBI on April 11, 2024. The CBI’s remand application cited the need for custodial interrogation to unearth a larger conspiracy and establish the money trail related to the excise policy. Both agencies allege irregularities in the excise policy modifications, including undue favours and loss to the exchequer.

The investigation stems from prima facie violations highlighted in a report by the Delhi Chief Secretary, indicating breaches of various laws and rules governing the excise policy. The probe alleges diversion of funds and fraudulent practices by beneficiaries and officials involved in policy modifications.
