Philippines Rejects Water Cannons, Prefers Diplomacy in West Philippine Sea Standoff
Key Highlights:
- President Marcos rules out using water cannons on Philippine ships in the West Philippine Sea.
- Manila opts for diplomatic responses to Chinese attacks in disputed waters.
- Philippines aims to garner international support against China’s actions through diplomacy.
In a recent announcement, Philippine President Bongbong Marcos dismissed the idea of deploying water cannons on Philippine ships navigating the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Instead, the island nation asserts its stance against Chinese aggression through diplomatic channels. Amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea, Marcos emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to resolving disputes peacefully, avoiding actions that could further inflame the situation.
Recent incidents of water cannon attacks by China in the South China Sea prompted Manila to seek international condemnation for Beijing’s actions. The Philippines Coast Guard aims to expose China’s maneuvers, rallying support for freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway. Despite provocations, Marcos reiterated the Philippines’ reluctance to escalate tensions, opting for dialogue over confrontation.
The decision not to retaliate with water cannons aligns with the Philippines’ pursuit of diplomatic solutions. Senator Jinggoy Estrada echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the country’s consistent use of diplomatic protests to address China’s encroachments in territorial waters. As tensions persist, speculation looms over potential US intervention due to the mutual defense treaty between the US and the Philippines. However, for now, Manila remains focused on diplomatic efforts to safeguard its sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
