Lok Sabha Poll Prep: 188 Security Personnel Air-lifted to Snow-Bound Kishtwar,JK
In a significant operation, 188 security personnel, comprising 144 Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and 44 Jammu and Kashmir Police officers, were airlifted by three Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters to the snow-bound Marwah and Warwan areas in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. This operation, part of preparations for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 19 in the Udhampur parliamentary seat, marks the maiden airlift of men and materials in the country under such circumstances.
Challenges of Remote Deployment
The deployment of security personnel at 31 polling booths in remote pockets of Kishtwar district presents unique logistical challenges. Marwah and Warwan, with their difficult terrain and lack of road connectivity, required meticulous planning and joint efforts between the district election office, Kishtwar, and the Indian Air Force.

The road connectivity to Marwah and Warwan areas via Sinthan and Margamtop, situated at an altitude of 12,500 feet, further complicates transportation due to snow-clad areas. However, Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu and Kashmir, P K Pole, has made special arrangements for safe transportation of polling parties, election logistics, and materials to ensure smooth conduct of elections.
Ensuring Safety and Security
District Election Officer Devansh Yadav emphasized the meticulous planning involved in ensuring the safety and security of polling parties, particularly in the shadow zones and sensitive areas. Five intermediate strong rooms have been established for secure storage of ballots, enhancing the efficiency of the electoral process.
Yadav reiterated the administration’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that 31 polling party members and reserves will be airlifted to far-flung polling stations situated in the interiors of Marwah and Warwan. This reaffirms the commitment to ensuring no voter is left behind while conducting free and fair elections.
