Study Finds Link Between MUTYH Gene and Solid Tumors
Researchers discover that mutations in the MUTYH gene, previously associated with colorectal cancer, may also contribute to the development of other solid tumors. The largest study to date, involving over 350,000 patient biopsy samples, reveals a potential link between having a single mutated copy of MUTYH and increased susceptibility to certain cancers.
Implications for Cancer Treatment
The study, published in JCO Precision Oncology, suggests that individuals with a mutated copy of MUTYH exhibit additional genetic mutations and a defective DNA repair pathway, potentially heightening their vulnerability to specific solid tumors. While this finding doesn’t elevate the risk for breast or prostate cancer, it broadens our understanding of MUTYH’s role beyond colorectal cancer. Moreover, it opens avenues for exploring targeted therapies that manipulate the base excision repair pathway, offering new strategies against various solid cancers.
