Body of Missing Climber Found One Year After Uttarakhand Mountaineering Tragedy

Uttarkashi, India: In a poignant turn of events, the body of a missing climber has been discovered one year after a devastating avalanche claimed the lives of 29 mountaineers en route to the Draupadi Ka Danda peak, marking one of the worst mountaineering tragedies in the region. The recovery operation was carried out by a team from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) as they located the body in a crevasse along the path to the Draupadi Ka Danda summit.

The recovered body has been identified as that of Vinay Panwar, a sailor serving in the Indian Navy. Panwar, a native of Dehradun who was stationed in Rameshwaram, was among the unfortunate victims of the tragic incident.

NIM Registrar Praveen Kumar confirmed the successful retrieval of the body, which was transported to the base on Thursday using a helicopter.

The tragic avalanche occurred in October of the previous year, resulting in the loss of 29 lives during their ascent of the Draupadi Ka Danda peak. Over the course of a month-long search operation, 27 bodies were recovered. The discovery of Vinay Panwar’s body has now reduced the number of missing climbers to just one, Lt Col Deepak Vashisth, whose body has yet to be located and recovered.

This discovery brings a sense of closure to the families and loved ones of Vinay Panwar, offering some solace amid the lingering sorrow from the mountaineering tragedy.
