AAP Leader Sanjay Singh in 5-Day ED Custody: Delhi Liquor Policy Case Unfolds
In a significant development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh has been remanded to five-day custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). This move follows his recent arrest in connection with a money laundering case related to the now-abolished liquor policy in Delhi.
Money Trail Leads to AAP Leader
The ED disclosed that a businessman had transferred Rs 3 crore to Mr. Singh, and this transaction formed a crucial part of the money trail associated with the Delhi liquor policy case. The agency’s assertion relied on statements made by Delhi businessman Dinesh Arora, an accused in the liquor policy case who has now turned approver.
Digital Evidence and Confrontation
The ED informed the court that it had seized digital evidence from the premises of the AAP Member of Parliament and intends to confront him with this evidence. The agency alleged that the money had been delivered to Mr. Singh by Sarvesh, an employee of Arora. The ED’s counsel contended that there was a direct link to the proceeds of the crime.
Legal Arguments and Allegations
Sanjay Singh’s legal counsel argued that Arora, who had initially been arrested by the same ED, had now become an approver. He questioned the timing of Mr. Singh’s arrest, highlighting that the statement from Arora about transferring Rs 2 crore to the AAP leader had been recorded in August. He also raised doubts about the ED’s intention to confront Mr. Singh with evidence collected from 239 searches.
In response, the ED emphasized that Dinesh Arora’s status as an approver had been determined by a judicial order. The agency dismissed any suggestion of inducement in Arora’s statement against Sanjay Singh.
Sanjay Singh’s Defense
During the proceedings, Sanjay Singh vehemently denied the allegations against him, characterizing them as “lies.” He claimed that the accusations had arisen after Dinesh Arora and Amit Arora had been in the custody of law enforcement agencies for an extended period. Mr. Singh asserted that he welcomed a thorough investigation and was prepared to face the consequences if any evidence supported the charges.
Political Context
Sanjay Singh’s arrest is the second involving a senior AAP leader in the Delhi liquor policy case. Previously, former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, had also been arrested. The AAP has characterized these arrests as politically motivated and a response to the emerging INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties ahead of the 2024 general election.
The BJP, on the other hand, has accused the AAP of corruption and suggested that the party resorts to political tactics when confronted with allegations of wrongdoing.
