AFSPA Extended in Nagaland Amidst Security Concerns
The Central government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, in Nagaland, designating eight districts and 21 police stations in five districts as “disturbed areas” for a period of six months, effective from April 1. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) made this decision following a review of the law and order situation in the state.
Areas Affected
The districts of Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren, along with specific police stations in Zunheboto, Mokokchung, Kohima, Wokha, and Longleng districts, have been declared as “disturbed areas.” This declaration grants security forces certain powers under the AFSPA to maintain law and order.
Background
This extension comes after a previous declaration of eight districts and 21 police stations as “disturbed areas” in October 2023. The AFSPA empowers security forces to take necessary actions to combat insurgency and maintain peace in areas facing security challenges.
