Survivors of Ciudad Juárez fire remain in limbo a year later
On March 27, 2023, a devastating fire engulfed an immigration detention center in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, claiming the lives of 40 individuals and leaving 27 others severely injured. The facility housed 68 men from Central and South America awaiting asylum in the United States after citywide raids.
Calls for Accountability and Justice
Survivors and family members affected by the tragedy continue to struggle without adequate resources or protection to aid in their healing process. Viangly, wife of survivor Eduard, stresses the need for better asylum policies and respect for migrants’ human rights. She emphasizes that migration is not a crime and demands accountability from the governments involved.
A Commitment to Support and Advocate
Crystal Sandoval, Director of Cross-Border Initiatives at Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, echoes the sentiment, vowing to honor the victims’ memories and provide ongoing support for those impacted. Las Americas has facilitated medical care, offered case management services, and advocated for long-term humanitarian protection for survivors and their families.
Addressing Systemic Issues
Sandoval underscores the urgent need for justice and reparations for the victims and their loved ones, attributing the tragedy to flawed government policies. She criticizes the Biden administration’s asylum ban, which has left thousands stranded in Mexico, and emphasizes the risks associated with criminalizing migration. Without addressing these systemic issues, she warns of the potential for similar tragedies in the future.
