Apple Abandons MicroLED Display Project for Smartwatches
Apple Inc. has decided to discontinue its ambitious project aimed at developing microLED displays for its smartwatches, ending a long-running effort.
The decision to halt the in-house development of microLED technology comes after recent reports that the company has stopped the project due to its high cost and complexity. This move marks the end of another costly research and development initiative for Apple.
Reorganization and Job Cuts
As part of the decision to wind down the microLED display project, Apple is reorganizing its display engineering teams and eliminating several dozen roles in both the US and Asia. The affected employees will have the opportunity to find other roles within the company, but layoffs are expected for some.
The project, which aimed to create brighter and more vibrant displays for future versions of the Apple Watch, ultimately proved to be too challenging for the company. Despite the setback, Apple remains committed to innovation and is likely to explore other display technologies for its future products.
