Internet Speed Showdown: Comparing The Fastest And Slowest Countries
If you’re aiming to become a digital nomad, you’ll need to know where in the world you’ll be able to smoothly connect to the internet. With the growing popularity of remote working, these countries stand out as the best – and worst – in the world when it comes to internet speed.
Alan, a website contributor at Increditools, discusses the countries with the best and worst Internet connectivity.
The Speedsters At The Top Of The Table
At the top of the list, Singapore has the fastest internet on Earth, highlighting its advanced digital infrastructure. This achievement showcases the country’s commitment to providing important amenities to all its citizens, including high-speed Internet access.
There are a mixture of countries from different regions, though it’s notable that all those listed on the fastest list are richer, well-developed, peaceful nations. Bucking this trend somewhat, Chile outpaces many more developed countries, having significantly invested in its digital infrastructure.

Those Lagging Behind
In the second table, Cuba has the slowest broadband connection. This reflects the country’s restricted access to global telecommunications networks and the lack of investment in the country’s internet infrastructure. Also coming in near the bottom are Afghanistan and Syria, countries that have both been affected by long-term conflicts that have destroyed their infrastructure. Just as richer, more well-developed nations dominated the faster list, it’s obvious that the opposite is happening on the slower list.
What Affects Internet Speed Across A Whole Country?
Building up good internet infrastructure in large regions is tricky due to the high costs of setting up cables and fiber optics. This contrasts with small countries with lower populations, which can be served by fewer cables that provide fast and affordable internet connections. This is reflected in the fact that small countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Monaco, and Iceland are among those who have the fastest internet speeds.
Sometimes, data sent from one country has to go through other regions or continents to reach its destinations. Countries with more Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) manage their internet traffic better, avoiding the need to route it internationally.
Information For Digital Nomads
You’ll need at least 115+Mbps for smooth remote working, depending on your online activities. Alan says, ‘Local SIM cards are good, followed by free (public) WiFi. However, the latter provides insecure connections which can easily be hacked. You should also research mobile hotspots, satellite Internet, and international roaming. But the best thing by far is to sort out your own private internet connection – whether that’s agreeing something with the host of your Airbnb or setting down some more permanent roots.’
