India-Bhutan Forge Stronger Energy Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay have pledged to broaden their energy collaboration beyond hydro-power to encompass solar, wind, hydrogen, and e-mobility initiatives. The leaders emphasized the importance of close cooperation in the energy sector during Prime Minister Tobgay’s official visit to India from March 14-18, 2024, marking his first overseas trip since assuming office in January 2024.

Expanding Energy Horizons

In a joint statement, both sides underscored their commitment to enhancing hydro-power cooperation while exploring avenues in non-hydro renewables and green technologies. The leaders directed officials to expedite consultations on new projects, demonstrating their resolve to bolster bilateral economic ties through sustainable energy initiatives.

Acknowledging the progress in the construction of the Punatshangchhu-II hydro-power project, with an anticipated commissioning in 2024, the leaders expressed satisfaction. Additionally, they welcomed advancements in finding viable solutions for the Punatsangchhu-I hydro-power project, underscoring their joint efforts towards safe and cost-effective implementation.

Comprehensive Bilateral Engagement

Prime Minister Tobgay engaged in discussions with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi on various facets of bilateral cooperation and regional affairs. Indian ministers, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Minister of Power and Renewable Energy RK Singh, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, extended their support during the visit.

Strengthening People-to-People Ties

Both nations recognized the invaluable contribution of Indian educators in enhancing STEM education in Bhutan. They committed to expanding educational partnerships, fostering deeper people-to-people connections, which form the cornerstone of India-Bhutan relations.

Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Prime Minister Tobgay reiterated Bhutan’s unwavering dedication to fortifying ties with India, rooted in shared history and mutual respect. The joint statement reaffirmed the enduring friendship and collaborative spirit between the two nations.
