Addressing the Nikkei Forum on India-Japan Special Strategic Partnership, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the imperative for India and Japan to be granted appropriate seats in the United Nations Security Council. He underscored that excluding the world’s most populous countries and significant UN resource providers hinders the organization’s effectiveness.

UN Reform Urged by EAM Jaishankar

During his visit to Japan, Jaishankar highlighted the necessity of UN reform due to the substantial increase in its membership since its foundation. He stated that the UN’s current role in addressing global issues falls short, emphasizing the need for leadership and decision-making changes in line with the organization’s expanded membership.

Progress in Security Council Change Discussions

Jaishankar acknowledged previous changes in the Security Council and expressed optimism about future reforms. He pointed out the absence of African and Latin American members, advocating for a more dynamic representation. The ongoing intergovernmental negotiation process, chaired by Kuwait and Austria, involves diverse models proposed by different countries and groups, including India, Japan, Germany, Brazil (G4), and the L-69 group representing developing countries. Jaishankar urged the timely realization of these changes for the benefit of the world.
