India-Thailand Boost Bilateral Ties with Strategic Agreements
India and Thailand solidified their partnership by signing multiple agreements during a ceremony attended by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Thailand’s Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara in the national capital.
The occasion followed the 10th India-Thailand Joint Commission meeting between Jaishankar and Nukara, emphasizing the commitment to advancing collaboration between the two nations. Nukara, Thailand’s Deputy PM, embarked on his inaugural official visit to India, with a warm welcome from Jaishankar. The leaders aim to propel the strategic partnership further.
A series of engagements are planned for Nukara, including a meeting with Vice President Jagdeep Dhwornkhar on Tuesday, before his departure on February 28, concluding the four-day visit. The 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting was convened in Bangkok on August 17, 2022.
Confident Growth in Bilateral Ties: Thailand’s Perspective
In a lecture titled “How Can Thailand and India be Strategic Partners?” organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs, Thailand’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, expressed confidence in the strengthening bilateral ties. He acknowledged the historical perspective of Cold War influences that created distance between the nations. However, with the end of the Cold War, both countries witnessed significant realignment in relations. Phuangketkeow attributed these positive changes to India’s reforms and opening up, along with transformations in East Asia. He highlighted the closer engagement between India and ASEAN, emphasizing the evolving dynamics in the region.
Strategic Partners in Regional Forums
India and Thailand, vital regional partners connecting South and Southeast Asia, collaborate closely in regional forums such as ASEAN, East Asia Summit (EAS), and Bay of Bengal Initiative for MultiSectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). The agreements signed underscore the commitment to fostering a strategic and collaborative partnership that benefits both nations on regional and global fronts. As the leaders work towards strengthening ties, their shared vision aligns with the changing geopolitical landscape in the region.
