In a shocking turn of events, Sabyasachi Ghosh, the BJP Kisan Morcha secretary in Howrah, found himself in legal trouble as he was apprehended on Wednesday night from the Sankrail area, where his hotel is situated. This arrest followed the detention of 10 individuals, including two minors and four adult women, from his hotel premises. The charges pressed against Ghosh encompass various sections of the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act, Indian Penal Code, and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as disclosed by a district police officer under the condition of anonymity.

Allegations Amidst Political Turmoil

Simultaneously, the timing of this incident coincides with allegations against some TMC leaders in Sandeshkhali, Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, accused by local women of sexual assault. Ghosh’s arrest has become a focal point, prompting a retaliatory response from the TMC against the BJP, which is attempting to leverage the Sandeshkhali situation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

BJP’s Moral Authority Questioned

Industry minister Shashi Panja and minister of state for finance Chandrima Bhattacharya seized the opportunity to criticize the BJP’s moral standing. At a press conference, they asserted that the BJP has forfeited the moral high ground to advocate for causes like “Beti Bachao” (save the girl child). Bhattacharya, referencing rape and murder cases in BJP-ruled states, expressed concerns about the character of the BJP in light of the arrest in Howrah.

BJP’s Response and Accountability

In response, Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya conveyed that Ghosh has been temporarily relieved of his responsibilities. He emphasized that the BJP will not shield Ghosh if found guilty in court, asserting the party’s commitment to letting the legal process unfold. Acknowledging the party’s continuous expansion, he highlighted the practical challenges of monitoring the activities of every leader and member, leaving the final decision to the court’s judgment.
