Air India Express Receives First Boeing 737 MAX-8 Aircraft as Part of Major Fleet Order
Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India, has taken delivery of its first two new Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft at Boeing’s facility in Washington, USA. These deliveries are part of a larger 470-aircraft order that the Air India Group placed with Boeing and Airbus earlier this year. This development precedes the merger of another subsidiary, AIX Connect (formerly known as AirAsia India), with Air India Express, which will operate as a low-cost arm of Air India after the merger.
The new fleet of Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft will enable Air India Express to expand its domestic and international network. These aircraft are known for their fuel efficiency, advanced technology, exceptional performance, and passenger comfort. They achieve a 20 percent reduction in fuel use and emissions while decreasing noise pollution by 50 percent compared to older models.
Additionally, Air India announced that its first widebody aircraft from Airbus, the A350, will enter service from December this year. The acquisition of the A350-900 was completed through a finance lease transaction with HSBC via GIFT City, India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). This marks the first wide-body aircraft leased through GIFT City.
The Air India Group’s 470-aircraft order includes various aircraft types, such as A350s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 777Xs, A320 neos, A321 neos, and Boeing 737 MAXs. This fleet expansion is part of the Tata Group’s consolidation of its airline business, which includes the merger of AIX Connect with Air India Express and the merger of Vistara with Air India.
These developments signal significant growth and modernization efforts within the Indian aviation industry.
