Uttar Pradesh Introduces Legislation for Lift Safety

In response to recent lift malfunctions leading to fatalities and injuries, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to introduce legislation in the state assembly today to enhance the safety of lift occupants. The proposed bill mandates building authorities to ensure the presence of rescue devices, emergency alarms, and CCTVs in elevators. The move follows tragic incidents in Noida, including a lift crash at Amrapali Dream Valley in September and another at River Side Tower in December.

    Key Provisions of the Bill

The legislation emphasizes adherence to prescribed procedures for construction, quality, safety features, installation, operation, and maintenance of lifts and escalators. It mandates building owners to register elevators in both public and private buildings, including those already installed in older buildings. The bill calls for the installation of auto rescue devices, emergency alarms, CCTVs, adequate lighting, and a communication system in operative elevators.

    Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Directive

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, noting the absence of existing laws in this matter, directed officials to prioritize lift safety and proper maintenance. He highlighted the need for swift legislation and stressed the importance of compliance with building codes and guidelines for lift installation. The Chief Minister also advocated for insurance coverage for lift occupants on public premises and provisions for legal action against lift manufacturers in case of complaints.
