Union Government Considers Creation of Two New Administrative Units in Ladakh Amidst Demands for Sixth Schedule and Statehood
The Union government is contemplating the establishment of fresh administrative divisions in Ladakh in response to the residents’ calls for inclusion in the Sixth Schedule and attainment of statehood.
While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been pushing for the establishment of five new districts in Ladakh, it is anticipated that the Union Government will declare the creation of two new administrative units.
According to reports from The Tribune, the government might extend additional administrative units and augment powers for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils. Although the proposal for granting district status to Zanskar and Nubra is being reviewed, the likelihood of achieving full statehood appears slim. Concurrently, deliberations on the Sixth Schedule and local employment concerns are ongoing.
In the midst of ongoing protests, a delegation comprising leaders from Leh Apex Body (LAB), Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Brig BD Mishra (retd), Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, and Hill Development Council chairpersons is scheduled to meet Union Minister Nityanand Rai on February 19.
MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has engaged in discussions with senior leaders regarding the potential negative repercussions the protests might have on the Lok Sabha election for the lone seat in the Union Territory. Insiders have suggested that the central government is poised to announce the establishment of two new districts, Zanskar and Nubra, in Ladakh, fulfilling the longstanding demands of the local population, given their considerable distance from the current district headquarters.
