Karnataka to Challenge Cauvery Water Release Order in Supreme Court
Karnataka’s Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has announced that the state will challenge the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) directive to release water to Tamil Nadu before the Supreme Court.
The CWRC had ordered Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu at a rate of 3,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) from September 28 to October 15. Siddaramaiah stated that he consulted with the state’s legal team, which recommended challenging the order.”We are challenging the order of the Regulation Committee before the Supreme Court. We don’t have water to give,” the chief minister stated during a press conference.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed satisfaction over the CWRC’s decision to reject Tamil Nadu’s request for 12,000 cusecs and instead recommend the release of 3,000 cusecs.Karnataka cited a shortfall in cumulative inflows to its four reservoirs in the Cauvery basin up to September 25, which are holding only 53.04% of their capacity.
