ICC Lifts Suspension on Sri Lanka Cricket: Swift Return to International Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Sunday the immediate lifting of the suspension imposed on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). This decision marks the swift return of Sri Lanka to the international cricket arena. The ICC Board, which closely monitored the situation since the suspension, expressed satisfaction that SLC has rectified the issues, thereby complying with the membership obligations.

Background: SLC’s Suspension and Political Turmoil

In November 2023, Sri Lanka Cricket faced a suspension by the ICC amid political turbulence in the country. The suspension followed the introduction of an interim committee led by Arjun Ranatunga, appointed by the Sri Lanka Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe. This decision came on the heels of a disappointing performance by the Sri Lankan cricket team in the Cricket World Cup, prompting significant changes within the cricket board. The ICC Board, convening on November 21, initially allowed Sri Lanka to continue participating in international cricket, both in bilateral series and ICC events.

Exception Granted: Sri Lanka’s Resumption in International Cricket

President Shammi Silva of Sri Lanka Cricket passionately appealed to the ICC board members for an exception, allowing the nation to resume international cricket despite the suspension. In response to Silva’s plea, the ICC Board granted an exception, enabling Sri Lanka to compete internationally in both bilateral series and ICC events. This exception paved the way for Sri Lanka to host Zimbabwe for a white-ball series earlier this year, showcasing a swift return to the international cricketing landscape.
