Delhi Hits Winter Power Peak: Record 5,816 MW Demand Surpasses Previous High
Delhi’s winter power demand reached an unprecedented peak of 5,816 megawatts (MW) on Monday morning, setting a new record for winter months and surpassing the previous high of 5,798 MW on January 19. This marks the sixth instance in January where Delhi’s power demand has exceeded last year’s peak winter demand of 5,526 MW recorded on January 6, 2023. Except for January 2, the city has consistently witnessed peak demands exceeding 5,000 MW every day this month.
Green Power Dominance: Over 2000 MW Enhances Winter Supply Reliability
Apart from long-term agreements with power plants, Delhi’s power grid is bolstered by over 2,000 MW of green power, playing a crucial role in ensuring a reliable power supply during the winter. This includes 840 MW of solar power from SECI, 540 MW of hydropower, 500 MW of wind power, 40 MW from waste-to-energy, and 160 MW of rooftop solar power installed across South, West, East, and Central Delhi. Approximately 60% of the maximum ‘winter’ power demand in the BSES area will be met with green power.
The report further highlights that BSES discoms employ strategies like “banking” surplus power, utilizing power exchange, and ensuring sufficient “spinning reserves” to handle surplus power and ensure a reliable supply. These discoms are also making arrangements to procure power during the summer months. Additionally, BSES discoms plan to bank surplus power with other states, ensuring availability during summer. BRPL aims to bank up to 290 MW with states like Himachal Pradesh and Goa, while BYPL plans to bank up to 150 MW with states like Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Kerala.
Advanced Forecasting Techniques: AI and ML in Power Management
BSES uses advanced statistical forecasting models with complex algorithms, coupled with state-of-the-art weather forecasting solutions, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, to effectively manage power challenges and ensure a resilient and efficient power supply.
