
Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on Higher Assistance for Persons with Disabilities
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre, seeking its response to a plea filed by Delhi-based organization ‘Bhumika Trust.’ The plea requests that the quantum of assistance provided to persons with disabilities should be 25 percent higher than that given to others under similar social welfare schemes. The bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, requested Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to assist the Supreme Court in the matter.
Supreme Court Dismisses Plea for a Single “Constitutional Religion” in India
The plea is based on the proviso to section 24(1) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Section 24 of the Act deals with social security, and section 24(1) states that the assistance provided to persons with disabilities under such schemes and programs should be at least 25 percent higher than similar schemes applicable to others.
Indian Supreme Court Refuses to Entertain Jharkhand Chief Minister’s Plea Against ED Summons
Jayant Singh Raghav, president of the ‘Bhumika Trust,’ highlighted that the disability pension provided by various states is an example of such schemes. The bench decided to issue notice only to the Union of India for now and will await the government’s response.
