SC Questions Tamil Nadu Government’s Ban on Ayodhya Telecasts
The Supreme Court challenged the Tamil Nadu government’s alleged oral order to prohibit live telecasts of Ram Lalla’s ‘Pran Prathishta’ in Ayodhya from being shown in temples across the state.
The court criticized the government, stating that banning such events solely because Hindus are a “minority” in specific areas is unacceptable.
The bench directed authorities not to summarily deny permissions based on such grounds, calling the orders “atrocious.”
The court emphasized a homogenous society and instructed the authorities to act in accordance with the law, examining applications for live telecasts and providing reasons for rejection if necessary.
The BJP’s State Unit Secretary Vinoj P Selvam filed a plea against the oral order, prompting the Supreme Court to issue notices to the Tamil Nadu government.
The Central government expressed shock at the situation, urging the court to send a strong message that the Constitution governs the nation, including Tamil Nadu. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on January 29.
