Union Minister Launches Tata Memorial Center-affiliated Cancer Care Unit

The Union Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with independent charge of Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced the launch of a state-of-the-art Tata Memorial Center (TMC) Mumbai-affiliated Cancer Care Unit in the new block of Government Medical College Kathua, marking a significant development in accessible healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir.

Accessible and Affordable Healthcare

Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that the establishment of this advanced center is a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible healthcare across India. He noted that many families were pleading for admission to Tata Hospital Mumbai or accommodations for attendants, prompting the decision to start the Tata-affiliated facility in Kathua.

Expanded Cancer Care Coverage

With the inauguration of the Tata-affiliated Cancer Care Unit in Kathua, patients from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab will gain access to affordable treatment, saving time and energy. Dr. Singh highlighted the increasing prevalence of cancer due to factors such as changing lifestyles and environmental influences, making a Tata Satellite Cancer care facility in Kathua a vital addition to the region.

A Health Circuit for the Region

Dr. Jitendra Singh envisions the Udhampur-Kathua-Doda Parliamentary Constituency becoming a future “Health Circuit” for the region, featuring state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, including centrally funded medical colleges, a biotech park, an Ayurvedic college, a homeopathy college, and more.

Promising Future for Onco-care

The Minister also expressed optimism about the future of onco-care in GMC Kathua. He mentioned plans to provide Onco DM and MCH seats in the coming years, inviting world-class cancer specialists for treatment, lectures, and seminars. Training has been provided to technicians in this regard.

Maternal ICU and Oxygen Plant

In addition to the Cancer Care Unit, Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated a Maternal ICU and a 300 LPM Oxygen Plant at GMC Kathua. He stressed the importance of having an oxygen plant in the hospital, particularly in emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic.

India’s Advances in Healthcare

Dr. Jitendra Singh noted India’s significant strides in healthcare, including producing vaccines to prevent malignancies like CERVAVAC. He highlighted the growth of India’s biotechnology sector, aiming to achieve a $150 billion bio-economy by 2025.

Comprehensive Healthcare and Preventive Focus

Dr. Singh commended PM Narendra Modi for emphasizing preventive healthcare, which led to the development of two DNA vaccines and one nasal vaccine within two years. India has transitioned from a sectoral and segmented approach to comprehensive need-based healthcare services.

The Tata-affiliated Cancer Care Unit in Kathua represents a significant step in expanding accessible and affordable healthcare in the region, aligning with the broader vision of a “Healthy India” under PM Narendra Modi.
