Fog Causes Delays for 26 Trains in Delhi, Residents Grapple with Intense Cold and Train Disruptions
Heavy fog disrupted train schedules in the national capital on Tuesday morning, causing delays for at least 26 trains, as reported by Indian Railways. An official from the railway authority stated, “26 trains in the Delhi area are running behind schedule due to fog.”
Among the affected trains were Bhopal-Nizamuddin, Bangalore-Nizamuddin, Bhubaneshwar-New Delhi Rajdhani, Ranikamlapati Bhopal-New Delhi, Howrah-New Delhi Duronto, Chennai-New Delhi, Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Exp, Kanpur-New Delhi Shramshakti, Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Exp, Saharsa-New Delhi Vaishali Exp, Rewa-Anand Vihar Exp, Prayagraj-New Delhi Exp, Azamgarh-Delhi Kaifiyat Exp, Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Exp, Rajendranagar-New Delhi, Banaras-New Delhi Exp, Ambedkarnagar-Katra Exp, Chennai-New Delhi GT, Chennai-New Delhi, Hyderabad-New Delhi, Ranikamlapati-Nizamuddin, Katihar-Amritsar Exp, Jammutawi-Ajmer Exp, Kamakhya-Delhi Exp, Ferozpur-sey, and Ajmer-Katra Exp.
As cold weather conditions intensified in New Delhi on Monday night, people sought refuge in night shelter homes. A caretaker at a shelter home in Dandi Park, Yamuna Bazar, explained, “There are five shelter homes here, closed since floods on July 12. A case is ongoing in the Supreme Court. All arrangements are made by homeless individuals, and there is no provision for food. I have been working here for the last 8 to 9 years since its inception.”
A tea seller at Anand Vihar Bus terminus mentioned a decline in footfall due to the cold, resulting in reduced business. An auto driver also highlighted the impact of cold and fog on train delays, leading to a lack of work. “We are lighting a bonfire to keep ourselves warm. For the last 3 to 4 days, it has been too cold. People are returning home without earning a rupee,” he added.
Residents in Firozshah Road expressed the severity of the cold, relying on bonfires for warmth. A local emphasized the need for government assistance, while a laborer mentioned the intermittent nature of work due to the cold.
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius on Monday, according to the IMD. Locals braved the cold, gathering around bonfires for warmth. Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, DG, IMD, forecasted a further drop in night temperatures during 5-11th January, leading to potential cold wave conditions in central India and adjoining northern plains. Day temperatures are expected to be below normal, particularly in Madhya Pradesh, northern parts of Maharashtra, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh, and adjoining areas of Haryana and Rajasthan.
