Japan Rocked by 155 Earthquakes Since Monday, Toll Rises to 30 with Widespread Damage and Tsunami Aftermath
Since Monday, the island nation has experienced a staggering 155 earthquakes, including a powerful 7.6-magnitude tremor and another exceeding magnitude 6. The toll from a substantial earthquake in central Japan has risen to 30, with 14 individuals sustaining serious injuries, as reported by AFP citing local authorities. The aftermath of the major earthquake included tsunami waves reaching over a meter high, leading to damaged homes and a significant overnight fire that caused widespread destruction.
Local media aired news footage revealing the extent of the disaster, featuring toppled buildings, sunken boats at a port, numerous charred homes, and residents left without power in freezing temperatures overnight.
Here are additional details about the earthquake in Japan:
- Japan’s Meteorological Office has lifted all tsunami warnings and advisories implemented on Monday following the major quake. Despite this, officials caution that slight changes in tidal levels could still occur.
- Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated that the earthquakes have resulted in “extensive damage with numerous casualties.” With the tsunami warning lifted, the government aims to establish sea routes to reach isolated areas in the northern Noto peninsula.
- As of Tuesday, over 32,000 households in the region remain without power, according to AFP, citing the local energy provider. Major highways around the epicenter have been closed, and bullet train services from Tokyo have been suspended.
- The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning that more strong aftershocks could occur in the coming days, heightening concerns for the affected regions.
