Surge in Indian Asylum Seekers to US via ‘Dunki’ Routes Raises Alarm
Recent flight connections to Nicaragua have drawn attention due to the surge of asylum seekers heading to the United States from this Central American nation. Disturbingly, the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) data for the fiscal year 2023 shows a notable increase in illegal attempts by Indians to enter the US, with 96,917 reported cases – a staggering 51.61 percent rise from the previous year.
The concern deepens with the method adopted by certain migrants, known as ‘dunki’ flights, whereby individuals use third countries with lax travel document requirements to transit towards their final destinations.
These figures reflect an alarming trend, pointing to a sharp uptick in Indian nationals trying to make their way into the US via unconventional routes. The surge of nearly 97,000 attempted entries in just one fiscal year raises questions about the security and legality of these migration methods, notably via the ‘dunki’ flights.
The ‘dunki’ flight strategy involves migrants maneuvering through third countries with more lenient regulations for travel documents, aiming to ultimately arrive at their desired destinations. This approach has drawn significant concern, prompting heightened scrutiny and attention from border security agencies due to its implications for immigration laws and potential risks associated with irregular migration.
The revelation of this significant surge in illegal entry attempts by Indians via such unconventional transit routes underscores the pressing need for tighter border controls and stricter enforcement to prevent unlawful migration while ensuring the security and integrity of immigration processes.
