IMD Tests AI for Enhanced Weather Forecasting Amidst Rising Extreme Weather Events
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is exploring artificial intelligence (AI) to bolster climate models and elevate weather forecasting capabilities amidst a surge in torrential rains, floods, and droughts across the country. A senior weather official revealed that intensified weather clashes, a result of global warming, have amplified extreme weather occurrences, causing nearly 3,000 deaths this year, as estimated by the Centre for Science and Environment.
Weather agencies worldwide are turning to AI for cost-effective and quicker forecasting, with Britain’s Met Office highlighting its potential to revolutionize weather predictions. In India, where accurate forecasting is pivotal due to its vast population, the IMD, leveraging supercomputers for mathematical modeling, aims to enhance forecasts through an expanded observation network using AI, thus potentially improving data quality while reducing costs.
K.S. Hosalikar, head of climate research and services at IMD, expressed expectations that AI-based climate models and advisories currently under development will enhance forecast accuracy. The IMD has already utilized AI for public alerts concerning heatwaves and diseases like malaria. Plans include expanding weather observatories, providing village-level data for more precise forecasts.
The government has initiated steps to incorporate AI into traditional models for weather and climate forecasts, establishing a center for workshops and conferences aimed at testing this concept. Experts emphasize the need for better data resolution to maximize AI’s effectiveness, indicating that location-specific magnification of existing forecasts demands high-resolution spatial and temporal data.
