Uttarakhand Cabinet Greenlights Draft for Uniform Civil Code
The Uttarakhand Cabinet, under the leadership of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, has given its nod to the decisions made by the five-member committee tasked with crafting a draft for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Despite awaiting the comprehensive report from the committee, the Cabinet approved the progress made in this direction during a meeting held on Friday.
Headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, who presently leads the Delimitation Commission of India, the committee comprises retired Delhi High Court judge Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, ex-chief secretary and IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, and Doon University Vice-Chancellor Surekha Dangwal.
The implementation of the UCC was pledged to the people of Uttarakhand ahead of the 2022 assembly elections. Article 44 of the Indian Constitution advocates for the establishment of a Uniform Civil Code throughout the country, aiming for a unified set of laws governing marriage, inheritance, adoption, and various other matters.
The discussion surrounding the UCC has been a contentious topic, sparking diverse opinions over the past four years. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reignited the conversation by advocating strongly for the implementation of a uniform legislation during his address in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
PM Modi emphasized that the nation cannot operate under dual laws and asserted that the Uniform Civil Code aligns with the foundational principles and ideals of the Constitution. The renewed focus on this issue underscores its significance and ongoing relevance in the country’s legal landscape.
