SKIMS Makes History with First Swap Kidney Transplant, Advancing Patient Care and Tackling Organ Shortages
The SKIMS Department of Urology & Kidney Transplant achieved a significant milestone on Friday by successfully conducting the first-ever Swap Kidney Transplant in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Praising the accomplishment, the Director of SKIMS highlighted the institution’s dedication to patient care and described the swap transplant as a groundbreaking advancement in kidney transplant procedures.
Prof. Saleem Wani, the Head of the Department of Urology & Kidney Transplant Unit (KTU), provided insights into the groundbreaking surgery, emphasizing its importance in expanding the donor pool and addressing organ shortages, a notable challenge in kidney transplants. Prof. Wani expressed optimism, stating that successful swap kidney transplants at SKIMS set a positive precedent for patients in need.
According to Prof. Wani, Swap Transplant is a crucial strategy to overcome organ shortages, requiring both logistical expertise and medical proficiency. SKIMS, leveraging its capabilities, accomplished the surgery, instilling hope for patients facing kidney-related challenges.
Prof. Wani highlighted the broader impact of SKIMS in the national organ transplant program, having completed over 550 kidney transplants. Recognizing organ shortage as a limiting factor, he underscored the significance of various transplant methods, including Cadaver Transplant, Swap Transplant, and ABO incompatible Transplant.
Addressing the issue of organ shortage, Prof. Wani mentioned that the Department of Urology & KTU is actively working on Cadaver Transplant initiatives. Collaborative efforts with the State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) involve conducting awareness programs to encourage organ donation.
Prof. Wani expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort, acknowledging the constant support and close coordination of the Department of Nephrology, Department of Anaesthesia, and Department of Immunology. He extended appreciation to the entire team, including medical professionals and specialists from various departments.
The Head of Urology & KTU also recognized the indispensable role played by Kidney Transplant Coordinators Ms. Yasmin and Ms. Ishrat. Their efforts in counseling and supporting families during the transplant process were crucial to the overall success of the groundbreaking surgery.
