Uganda and Zimbabwe Womens Cricket Teams Secure Spots in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier
In an impressive showcase of skill and determination, both the Uganda and Zimbabwe women’s cricket teams secured places in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier after their outstanding performances in the Africa Qualifier.
Uganda faced Tanzania in a challenging semi-final encounter where Concy Aweko led her team amidst a tough start at 5/3 in 5 overs. However, Stephani Nampiina’s resilient 51 and Rita Musamali’s unbeaten 35* lifted Uganda to 99/4. Despite Tanzania’s comfortable position at 53/1, Janet Mbabazi’s stellar performance with 3/14, supported by Musamali’s 3/11, helped Uganda secure a crucial 10-run victory, earning Musamali the Player of the Match accolade.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe displayed dominance in their semi-final, securing an 86-run win over Namibia. With each batter in Zimbabwe’s top four scoring over 20 runs, they posted 150/6, driven by Modester Mupachikwa’s 33.
In response, Namibia struggled, only seeing Edelle van Zyl surpassing 20 runs. Zimbabwe’s collective bowling, spearheaded by Precious Marange’s 3/9, Nomvelo Sibanda’s 2/8, and Josephine Nkomo’s 2/4, restricted Namibia to a mere 64.
In the tournament final, Zimbabwe successfully chased down Uganda’s total of 79, propelled by Marange’s exceptional 5/7, including a remarkable hat-trick, earning her the Player of the Final title.
These teams have now joined other qualifiers, including Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, USA, and Vanuatu in the ten-team Global Qualifier. This event will determine the final two spots for the T20 World Cup in 2024, scheduled to take place in Bangladesh in September and October.
Notably, Bangladesh, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and West Indies are already confirmed entrants for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024.
