Congress Welcomes Reported Move
In a significant development, the Congress’ parliamentary party chief, Sonia Gandhi, made a resounding statement on Tuesday, firmly declaring, “The women’s reservation bill is ours,” amid growing speculation that the long-pending bill may finally find its way to the floor of the Indian Parliament. The Congress party had been ardently championing the cause of women’s reservation for an extended period, and this declaration marks a significant moment in their ongoing advocacy.
Anticipation Builds as Parliament Awaits Bill
As the news of the bill’s possible introduction spread, the Congress expressed its wholehearted welcome for the reported move. This affirmation from the party leadership comes as no surprise, given their consistent and passionate demand for the implementation of the women’s reservation bill.
Cross-party Statements Support the Bill
Prominent Congress figures, including Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh and senior leader P. Chidambaram, have voiced their support for the bill. Jairam Ramesh, in a recent post on a social media platform, stated, “We welcome the reported decision of the Union Cabinet and await the details of the Bill.” He also raised the importance of consensus-building and transparency, suggesting that the bill’s discussion should have taken place in an all-party meeting before the Special Session, rather than behind closed doors.
A Victory for the Congress and Allies
Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram asserted that if the government indeed introduces the women’s reservation bill on Tuesday, it would be a resounding “victory for the Congress and its allies in the UPA government.” It is worth noting that during the UPA government’s tenure, the bill successfully passed in the Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2010. However, it faced a roadblock in the Lok Sabha, preventing its enactment into law.As the momentum builds around the women’s reservation bill, there is renewed hope for its passage in Parliament. The Congress party, along with its allies, is eagerly awaiting this momentous step towards gender equality in the political landscape
