Seismic Activity in Northern India and Nepal: Insights from Earth Sciences Minister
Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the occasional occurrence of moderate earthquakes in northern India and Nepal is attributed to fluctuations in seismic activity, given their proximity to active faults. Responding to questions in the Lok Sabha, Rijiju highlighted the activation of the Almora fault in western Nepal as the cause behind recent seismic events in the region, including a 5.8 magnitude quake on January 24 and subsequent temblors on October 3 and November 3.
Increased Earthquake Frequency in 2023
Rijiju noted that the activation of the Almora fault, marked by the aforementioned mainshocks and subsequent aftershocks, led to an increased frequency of earthquakes in 2023. Despite this, the background seismicity remained unchanged during the specified period.
Historical Perspective: Earthquake Statistics
Providing earthquake statistics for the region, the minister mentioned that from January to November 2023, northern India and Nepal experienced 97 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 to 3.9, a significant rise compared to previous years. The region also encountered 21 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0-4.9 during the same period.
“It is common for northern India and Nepal to occasionally experience moderate earthquakes, and fluctuations in seismic activity. Nepal and the neighbouring northern part of India, situated near the active faults of the Himalayan region, are highly seismically active areas prone to frequent earthquakes due to collision tectonics, where the Indian plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate,” Rijiju explained.
Preventive Measures and Preparedness
Highlighting proactive measures, Rijiju mentioned the Seismic Zoning Map of India published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), offering guidelines for constructing earthquake-resistant buildings. The National Disaster Management Authority is actively engaged in earthquake drills, awareness programs, and earthquake management to enhance preparedness and response to earthquake-related incidents.
