India Raises Concerns About Missing Nationals in Kenya
During a three-day visit to India by Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto, a pressing matter was raised by the Indian side involving two Indian nationals, Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and Zaid Sami Kidwai, who have been missing in Kenya since July of the previous year. The disappearance of these individuals has sparked concerns, with unconfirmed reports suggesting they may have been abducted.
Continuous Engagement and Investigation
Dammu Ravi, the Secretary (Economic Relations) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the ongoing efforts in addressing this issue during a media briefing. Ravi mentioned that authorities from both countries are actively sharing information and coordinating their response to this sensitive case. He urged caution against speculation, noting that the investigation is still underway and the matter is currently before the Kenyan courts. The Indian High Commission in Kenya, led by High Commissioner Namgya Khampa, is closely monitoring the situation and remains in regular contact with Kenyan authorities.
Unconfirmed Reports and Diplomatic Efforts
In a significant development last October, a media report surfaced claiming a close aide of the Kenyan president had stated that the two missing Indians were allegedly killed by a now-disbanded Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) unit in Kenya. However, there has been no official confirmation of these claims. The Indian envoy in Kenya had previously met with President Ruto to request an acceleration of the investigation. Over 10 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, indicating the seriousness with which both nations are treating this incident.
