As the intense search operation in the dense forests of Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district stretches into its fifth day, the situation remains tense with the whereabouts of the terrorists still unknown. This prolonged operation has seen the loss of three senior security officers in the line of duty.

The terrorists, believed to be affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, are hiding deep within the cave-riddled forests of Gadol, strategically positioning themselves amidst treacherous terrain. Tragic Loss in Rough Terrain

A fateful attempt to approach the terrorist hideout led to heavy firing on Wednesday, trapping the security forces between the unforgiving hills and deep ditches. In the exchange, Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonchak from the Army, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Himayun Bhat were martyred. The fate of another missing soldier remains uncertain.

Inclement weather, including heavy rain, has hindered the counterterrorist operations. The firing ceased during the downpour, affording the terrorists an opportunity to regroup and strategize, thereby intensifying the challenges faced by the security forces. A forest fire, ignited by the heavy shelling, was fortunately extinguished by the rain.

Well-Equipped and Prepared

Reports suggest that the terrorists are well-trained in jungle warfare and high-altitude combat, indicating their readiness for a prolonged engagement in this rugged terrain. Setting up logistics in such an unforgiving environment likely took considerable time. Over the past 100 hours, the security forces have deployed a barrage of mortar shells, rockets, and high-tech equipment to target suspected terrorist hideouts. Surveillance through quadcopters and drones has also been instrumental in monitoring the situation.

The Army’s Northern Command chief, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, visited the encounter site to assess the situation. He received briefings on the deployment of advanced equipment, including drones and firepower, in the ongoing battle against the terrorists.
