- Health Impact: 90% of respondents reported experiencing common symptoms associated with poor Air Quality Index (AQI), including persistent coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, sore throat, and eye irritation.
- Worsening Respiratory Issues: 40% have noticed a decline in pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis among their family and friends, especially during the winter months.
- Seeking Medical Attention: Approximately 40% of residents in these cities seek medical help for health problems related to air pollution annually or every few years.
Lifestyle Adjustments and Misconceptions
- Changes in Outdoor Activities: To cope with the air pollution, 35% of respondents have ceased outdoor exercises and activities, while 30% have started wearing masks outdoors.
- Use of Air Purifiers: Only 27% of participants in Delhi and Mumbai use air purifiers. Intriguingly, 43% hold the misconception that using air purifiers can reduce immunity.
Implications of the Survey
The survey’s findings highlight the urgent need for effective measures to combat air pollution and improve air quality in these major cities. The significant number of people considering relocation and the health impacts underscore the critical situation of air quality and its repercussions on the population’s health and lifestyle choices. The misconceptions about air purifiers also point to a need for better public awareness and education regarding air quality and health.
