Tragic Train Collision Claims Lives of Three Elephants in West Bengal
A devastating incident occurred on Monday in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district when a goods train struck and killed three elephants, including two young ones. The collision happened in the Rajabhatkhawa-Kalchini section, an area known for its rich forest cover and proximity to the Buxa Tiger Reserve. This tragic event has highlighted the challenges of wildlife conservation in areas intersected by railway lines.
Lack of Safety Measures in the Affected Area
The area where the accident took place lacks the Intrusion Detection System (IDS), which is designed to prevent such collisions. The North Frontier Railway (NFR) official reported that the collision occurred at 7.20 am as the empty goods train was en route from Alipurduar to Siliguri. The lack of an IDS in this particular section of the railway, alongside the absence of a caution order or speed limit during the time of the incident, contributed to this unfortunate event.
Efforts to Enhance Safety and Prevent Future Incidents
In the wake of this incident, medical examinations were conducted for the train’s driver and assistant driver. The NFR official noted that the IDS is operational in some parts of the Alipurduar railway division but has not yet been installed in the Alipurduar-Kalchini section. Efforts are underway to extend the IDS to this area, with the tendering process ongoing for the Lumding and Rangia divisions as well. It was also mentioned that no incidents of elephant collisions have occurred in the areas where the IDS is already operational, underlining the system’s effectiveness in preventing such tragedies.
