Gold Smuggling Attempt Thwarted at Cochin Airport; iPhones Seized

Cochin Customs officials apprehended a male passenger arriving from Dubai at Cochin International Airport for attempting to smuggle gold. The passenger was intercepted at the green channel, where customs officers discovered gold concealed in an unusual manner. Based on profiling by the officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) Batch, two white-colored packets containing gold in a compound form were found hidden inside the cuffs of the t-shirt worn by the passenger.

Seizure of Gold and Undeclared iPhones

In addition to the concealed gold, the passenger was found carrying two new iPhone 15 Pro models in his checked-in baggage. These items were not declared at the customs counter, leading to their seizure alongside the gold. The total value of the seized gold is estimated to be over Rs 22.66 lakh. The gold packets weighed a total of 493 grams.

Ongoing Investigation by Customs

Customs officials have initiated a further investigation into the incident. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by customs authorities in combating the smuggling of precious metals and undeclared high-value items like smartphones.
