In response to the security breach in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy earlier last year, Superintendent of Police (SP) Gurvinder Singh Sanga has been suspended for negligence in duty.

    Incident Overview

The incident occurred on January 5, 2022, in Ferozepur, where SP Gurvinder Singh Sanga was in charge at the time. The breach led to Prime Minister Modi being stuck on a flyover for 15-20 minutes due to a road blockade by protesters.

Following the incident, a thorough investigation was initiated. The Punjab DGP’s report highlighted Sanga’s negligence, leading to his suspension. Sanga was serving as SP Operation in Ferozepur and is currently posted in Bathinda.

    Supreme Court’s Observations

The Supreme Court, citing the findings of a five-member committee led by former Justice Indu Malhotra, pointed out the failure of the Ferozepur SSP in maintaining law and order despite being informed about the Prime Minister’s route well in advance.

    Recommendations and Accountability

The committee recommended an oversight committee for the periodic revision of the ‘Blue Book’, which outlines security procedures. The Ministry of Home Affairs labeled the incident a “major lapse” in security protocols.
