Afghan Embassy in New Delhi Announces Permanent Closure
The Afghanistan embassy in New Delhi has declared its permanent closure, effective from November 23, 2023, marking a significant diplomatic development. This decision follows the embassy’s temporary cessation of operations on September 30, which was initially intended as a temporary measure in hopes of a change in the Indian government’s stance to allow normal operations.
Challenges and Diplomatic Stance
The embassy cited “persistent challenges from the Indian government” as the primary reason for this closure. They emphasized that this move should not be misconstrued as an internal conflict or related to diplomats switching allegiance to the Taliban. Instead, it is attributed to broader changes in policy and interests.
Impact on the Afghan Community in India
The Afghan embassy acknowledged the significant decline in the Afghan community in India since August 2021, noting that the number of Afghan refugees, students, and traders has nearly halved, with very limited new visas issued. The embassy reassured the community of its commitment to transparency and fairness, despite limited resources.

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Challenges
Despite facing attempts to tarnish its image and hinder diplomatic efforts, the embassy’s team worked diligently under challenging circumstances. Their focus was on securing humanitarian aid, online education scholarships, facilitating trade, and advocating for the formation of a broad-based government.
Future of the Diplomatic Mission
With the closure, the fate of the mission now rests with the Indian government, which could maintain the closure or consider alternatives, including the possibility of handing it over to Taliban diplomats. The responsibility of diplomats appointed by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has officially ended, marking the conclusion of the Afghan Republic’s mission in India.
Acknowledgment and Gratitude
The embassy expressed gratitude to the people of India for their support over the past 22 years and reiterated their commitment to serving the Afghan people. They also highlighted their diplomatic efforts against those defying the will of the Afghan people by denying inclusive governance and education rights to girls.
Earlier Announcement and Unequivocal Statement
The Afghan embassy had previously announced the closure of its operations on November 1, citing a lack of resources and failure by the Taliban regime to meet Afghanistan’s interests. Additionally, they clarified that certain consulates operating under the Taliban’s instructions do not align with the objectives of a legitimate or elected government.
