In a commendable effort, the Indian government has managed to repatriate four Indian nationals who were facing dire circumstances in flood-stricken Libya. The individuals, identified as Parvesh Kumar, Manpreet Singh, Rohit, and Sukhwinder Singh, had fallen victim to human trafficking and forced labor after being promised jobs in Italy by fraudulent travel agents.

Promises Turned Into Nightmare

Earlier this year in February, these four citizens embarked on a journey to Libya, but their aspirations for a better life took a dark turn. They were sold to criminal organizations and compelled to work at construction sites against their will.

Challenging Repatriation Process

The repatriation process was exceptionally challenging, as revealed by the Indian Consulate in Tunisia. It involved securing exit permits, providing emergency certificates, and arranging for air tickets under the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) provision of the Government of India.

Expressing Gratitude

Manpreet Singh, one of the repatriated workers, expressed his gratitude to the Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs for their support. He disclosed that they were sold to the mafia just two months after arriving in Libya. Sukhwinder Singh’s sister also shared her relief at her brother’s return, having lost contact with him for several months.

Devastating Flooding in Libya

This repatriation comes amid the backdrop of severe flooding in Libya, a crisis that has claimed numerous lives and displaced thousands of people. The devastating impact of the floods has been compounded by the challenges of human trafficking and forced labor faced by vulnerable individuals.

The situation in Libya remains precarious, and humanitarian efforts are ongoing to provide assistance to those affected by both the floods and criminal activities.
