Asad Umar Resigns from PTI and Politics: A Decade-Long Journey Comes to an End

Former planning minister Asad Umar, once a close aide of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, has taken a significant step in his political journey. On Saturday, Umar announced his resignation not only from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s basic membership but also from active politics. This decision comes after a tumultuous period marked by the May 9 riots, which led to a nationwide crackdown and the arrest of numerous PTI leaders.

The Fallout from the May 9 Riots: Political Exodus from PTI Continues

Umar’s departure adds to the growing list of politicians who have distanced themselves from the PTI in the aftermath of the May 9 incidents. The party witnessed a series of resignations and defections following a policy of confrontation with state institutions, leading to a collision that many deemed detrimental to the country’s interests. Despite the crackdown, Umar did not align himself with other parties, maintaining his stance against the confrontational approach.

Referring to a previous press conference, Umar emphasized his disagreement with the confrontational policy and expressed concern about its impact on state institutions. He extended gratitude to his supporters, especially the “NA-54 team and the voters who elected me twice,” pledging blessings upon the Pakistani nation. PTI leader Taimur Khan Jhagra acknowledged Umar’s departure as a loss and thanked him for his contributions, particularly during the Covid crisis.

Reflecting on a Decade: Umar’s Political Legacy and the Need for Healing

As Asad Umar bids farewell to politics, his departure is seen as a loss by some within the PTI. Jhagra highlighted the importance of creating space for professionals in politics, emphasizing the need for healing and bridge-building in the country’s political landscape.
