Winter’s Grip Tightens in J-k: Snowfall, Rains, and Road Closures Unsettle Region
Higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a fresh bout of snowfall on Friday, accompanied by widespread rains that drenched the plains and resulted in the closure of several roads. The snowfall was particularly pronounced in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, affecting key areas like Razdan Pass, Pir Ki Gali, Zojila Pass, Sinthan Top, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Doodpathri, Kulgam, and Machil. Simultaneously, the plains experienced extensive rainfall, leading to disruptions in normal life.
Transportation Chaos: Multiple Roads Closed Due to Snowfall
Due to the snowfall, numerous roads, including critical ones like Razdan Pass, Zojila Pass, Kishtwar-Anantnag road, Mughal road connecting Shopian district with Rajouri and Poonch, Phirkiyan Gali, Machil in Kupwara, and Srinagar-Sonamarg road, were closed for traffic. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway also faced closures initially after mudslides and shooting stones occurred near the Mehar area of Ramban district. Although the road stretch was partially restored, slow movement was reported at Dalwas and Mehad due to mud and sleet, urging drivers to exercise caution.

Meteorological Alert: Weather Forecast and Impact on Daily Life
The Meteorological Department in Srinagar predicted fairly widespread rain in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours. The forecast hinted at a gradual decrease in precipitation from late Friday evening onwards. Subsequently, the weather is expected to turn dry with warm days from November 11 to 17. Meanwhile, the widespread rains disrupted normal life in Srinagar and its surrounding areas, leading to a drop in temperature and low-lying roads getting inundated.
Temperature Readings and Advisory Issued by Kupwara Administration
Temperature recordings on Friday revealed varying degrees of cold across different regions, with Srinagar at 6.3 degrees Celsius, Qazigund at 5.0 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam at 4.7 degrees Celsius, Kupwara at 4.2 degrees Celsius, Kokernag at 6.2 degrees Celsius, and Gulmarg recording a low of -1.5 degrees Celsius. In response to the forecast, the Kupwara administration issued an advisory cautioning residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to avoid visiting regions prone to landslides and flash floods until weather conditions improve.
