Delhi Grapples with Severe Air Pollution
The capital city of India, Delhi, experienced a severe level of air pollution on Wednesday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to a worrying 420, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The iconic Kartavya Path was enveloped in heavy smog, signaling a grim start to the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted shallow fog with mist in the early hours, and a visibility of 800 meters at 8 am, indicating the thick smog blanketing the city.
Fluctuating Air Quality and Meteorological Conditions
Throughout Tuesday, Delhi’s air quality showed signs of improvement, but any hope of respite was short-lived as the AQI slipped back into the ‘very poor’ category by the afternoon. The shift in wind direction to northwesterly caused an influx of stubble burning smoke into the capital, exacerbating the pollution levels. Despite the fluctuations, the Decision Support System (DSS) indicated a slight decrease in the stubble burning contribution to Delhi’s pollution from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Projected Improvements and Weather Forecast
In the coming days, the Early Warning System (EWS) predicts an improvement in air quality, with strong winds expected to disperse some of the pollutants. The IMD forecasts a potential drizzle by November 10, which could further aid in clearing the smog. With the western disturbance approaching, Delhi is expected to experience an increase in wind speed and a slight rise in the minimum temperature.
Government Actions and Supreme Court Directive
In response to the severe pollution levels, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) remains in effect, enforcing stringent measures like banning certain diesel vehicles and halting construction projects. The Supreme Court, critiquing the effectiveness of the Delhi government’s odd-even traffic scheme, directed immediate action to halt crop burning in neighboring states, emphasizing the urgency of protecting public health amidst the pollution crisis.
