DGCA Flags Air India for Inadequate Passenger Compensation
The Indian aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has called Air India to account, issuing a show cause notice to the airline over its failure to adequately compensate passengers during flight disruptions. This move underscores the regulator’s intent to fortify passenger rights and align Indian airlines with best international practices.
Regulatory Scrutiny on Passenger Rights
The DGCA’s focus on passenger protection has been long-standing, with the establishment of guidelines in 2010, periodically revised, to ensure travelers are appropriately compensated in instances of denied boarding, flight cancellations, and delays. The notice served to Air India for not adhering to these guidelines is a part of the regulator’s ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with consumer-centric aviation requirements.
Past and Present Non-Compliance Issues
Despite a history of non-compliance for which Air India was previously fined Rs 10 lakhs, recent inspections at various major airports since May 2023 have revealed continued disregard for the prescribed norms. The issuance of the show cause notice is a direct result of these findings and reflects the DGCA’s commitment to upholding the standards laid out in the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) regarding passenger facilities during disruptions.
