Kerala Police Register 54 Cases for Spreading Communally Instigative Messages
In the wake of multiple explosions that shook Kochi’s Kalamassery, Kerala police have taken stringent actions against those responsible for spreading communally instigative messages on social media platforms. A total of 54 cases have been registered across the state in connection with this matter.
Cases Registered for Inciting Religious Hatred
The Kerala police have taken action against individuals who spread messages and news on social media platforms in a manner that promotes religious hatred and disrupts communal harmony. The highest number of cases were filed in Malappuram district (26 cases), with 10 cases in Ernakulam City, and five each in Ernakulam Rural and Thiruvananthapuram City. Additionally, there are two cases each in Thrissur City and Kottayam, and one each in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Kozhikode Rural.
Cracking Down on Fake Profiles
The police have identified numerous fake profiles on social media platforms that have been instrumental in spreading messages that promote religious hatred. Social media giants like Facebook, Instagram, X, and WhatsApp have been directed to help identify the IP addresses used by these fake profiles and hand over the information to law enforcement. Special teams within the cyber cell division of all districts are working around the clock to track down individuals responsible for these messages and take appropriate legal action.
Stringent Measures Following the Explosions
In response to the blasts that occurred at the Zamra International Convention Centre in Kalamassery, where a Christian sect’s prayer meeting was taking place, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the state police chief issued instructions to monitor social media platforms for communally instigative content. This led to cyber patrolling on social media and various legal actions being carried out.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were used in the blasts. A 20-member probe team was appointed by Chief Minister Vijayan to investigate the incidents, and arrests have been made in connection with the case.
