Dakar Rally 2027 Cancelled in Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions

Dakar Rally 2027 Cancelled in Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions

RIYADH, October 25, 2026 [VoM News]: The Dakar Rally 2027 will not be held in Saudi Arabia, with organisers announcing a change of venue following recent developments in the region. The rally will proceed in another territory, while Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the event again in 2028.

Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) and Saudi Motorsport Company (SMC) jointly announced the decision in coordination with the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF), with support from the FIA and the FIM.

The 2027 edition was originally scheduled to take place from January 1 to 15 in Saudi Arabia. Organisers described the decision as exceptional and a one-off measure, adding that the new location would be announced separately in the coming days.

A.S.O. said it was in direct contact with competitors, teams and partners to support them through the transition.

Saudi Arabia will return as host in 2028, when the rally is set to mark its 50th edition. Organisers said preparations were already underway to make the milestone event significant for both the competition and the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia has hosted seven consecutive editions of the Dakar Rally since 2020, with routes highlighting the countryโ€™s varied terrain.

The relocation comes amid heightened security concerns across the Middle East following the US-Israel war on Iran. Organisers cited regional developments but did not provide further details about the specific factors behind the decision.
